Did a quick trip near the driveway just before dark. A 1946 nickel and a 1965 dime are pretty cool, but not cool enough.
Also of interest a thin metal cup, part of an arrow, a drill bit, and yet another car.
Should start cooling off soon enough to spend a little more time out there.

Build a sifter?
As I become more and more frustrated with the level of junk in the yard (some of it may be cool though, you never know) With some help from the forums I've decided to try a sifter (the idea came from the forums, the frankensifter came from my head) to whittle away at some of the junk in the yard.
This area is going to be grass eventually, and there is not a better time to clean some of the trash out than right now.
Watch that video, I have shallow targets galore. Once I whittle them out some (via digging, or just maybe, sifting) I should have a better chance at the deeper targets.

frigidaire
Didn't have much time out there today. But I still managed to find a little. A Frigidaire handle, another shell, 39 cents (all modern) and a flatwrench. The flatwrench is pretty much the same color (or was the same color) as my International Harvester tractor. I wonder if the tractor had a toolkit at some point and this was included.

First Wheatie
It was a fairly productive day today. The yard gave up the first wheatie, a 1952 D. I also found a good deal of modern change totaling up to $.56 , Another shell (which from the forums seems to be a 308 blank), a small junk key, and a weird copper pin.
Things are getting better. These came from a spot I'd worked over twice, so I'm not sure if I've whittled out all the junk, or if I'm getting a little more efficient with the unit. An answer of both wouldn't surprise me.

First trip out (sort of)
Well, my metal detector hasn't arrived yet. Actually, it hasn't even shipped yet, but I also ordered my 4 year old a small toy metal detector, and it arrived today. We spent a couple hours out in the year seeing what it was capable of finding. He had a blast, looks like we'll have to be back out there tomorrow evening as well.
So, with the $10 metal detector, we pulled up 1 truck, 2 Hot Wheels, and 2 of the old hollow stamped cars; 3 dimes, a nickle and 5 pennies (all modern); some misc junk metal (most of which is impossible to ID) and a weird split bolt (designed for *something*, I'm sure).
Not too bad for our first trip outside digging where it beeped.

The timing is terrible.
So, I was going to hit the ares to the south of my house first due to the fact that I am having a new garage built over there.
I was expecting my detector to arrive before the concrete slab was poured, but this may not happen.
The permit was awarded today, and they may start working sooner than I thought.
I should ask one of the guys over at metaldetectingforum.com and see if they want to scour the area before it gets buried under concrete.

First Things First.
When I agreed to buy the house, I knew it was something I would end up doing.
The house itself, was converted from a farm shack to a small house by my great grandfather. Estimates on the original structure are from the 20's, and the build of the house was in 1948. There have been a few additions after that point, and a good portion of the land has been sold off.
The land I ended up buying with the house was 1.18 acres, not too bad for 20 minutes to downtown Dallas.
My grandparents bought the house from my great grandparents, and my mother bought out her sibling's share and it was her house until June of this year, when I bought it from her.
As I'm just starting out in metal detecting, A fairly low end unit will suffice. My wife just ordered me a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV and the additional 4 inch coil.
I'll be keeping track here of the stuff I find in the year here, in the neighbors yard that used to be the same property (if they will allow me to do so), in the area parks, and wherever else I manage to make it off to.
